The antioxidant capacity of radish microgreens

In previous articles, we have discussed some of the properties of radish microgreens. However, this time we wanted to dive deeper into the topic and explore their many benefits in more detail. Today, we came across a fascinating scientific article that thoroughly examines the antioxidant properties of radish, and we couldn’t resist the chance to share it with you.
This study, published in the journal Horticultura, evaluated the antioxidant capacity of three radish microgreen cultivars grown under different LED light conditions. The results revealed that the combination of blue and red LED lights (B:2R) stimulated the synthesis of key antioxidant compounds such as total soluble phenols, ascorbic acid, proteins, sugars, chlorophyll, and carotenoids. In addition, an increase in the dry matter of the plants grown under this light combination was observed.
The truth is that radish microgreens have shown a superior antioxidant capacity compared to other sprouted vegetables. This is due to their higher concentration of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and antioxidants in general. For example, radish sprouts contain a variety of phenols, flavonoids, lignans, coumarins, quinones, and tannins, all of which contribute to their antioxidant properties.
What does this mean? In short, the regular consumption of this microgreen can offer several health benefits, including:
- Antioxidant properties: they help neutralize free radicals in the body, reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
- Immune system support: their vitamin C content and other nutrients strengthen the body’s defenses.
- Cardiovascular health improvement: the compounds present in radish microgreens may contribute to heart health.
- Anti-inflammatory properties: some studies suggest that radish sprouts may help reduce inflammation in the body.
As you can see, radish microgreens are not only a delicious addition to our meals, but they also provide a powerful dose of essential antioxidants to help maintain good health.
